Actors! RoadRage NETRage, SurferRage..? Which ever it is, don't befall their...

Have you ever befallen victim to road rage?

Half asleep early morning, on route to work, and some idiot behind you starts laying on the horn and screaming at you wondering if you are waiting for any special color of green? Only to add to the rude awakening, you witness them squeal tires as they spin their car past you with single digit fingers waving as they fly? How about when we see on the local news, the helicopter catching a road rage chase between a hell-bent local driver taking out his rage on an unsuspecting innocent driver.. melodrama, melodrama.. It happens every day.. but unfortunately for the rest of us, this rage has spread onto the net.. and the rage is just as aggressive, and the repercussions just as damaging..

Take a moment and think about this. Does it relate to you? Anyone you know? Proper Net Etiquette isn't much different from the rules of the road. Respect the space of those around you, realize they have feelings and lives, to.. Courteous and Polite approaches are returned. I know I don't have to explain all of that to you, everyone knows the rules of the road.. but it's the highlighting of such rules that are important today. People need to be reminded of the basic cardinal rules of life.. which if I remember correctly, goes something like this..

For every positive and negative action, there is a reaction, and consequence to face.

What the heck is NETRage anyway? And what does it have to do with me?

Well, there are two forms of Rage whilst on your computer. There's SurfersRage, which does come in many forms. Some people enjoy spamming, and junking up inboxes with useless pop up adds. Some people enjoy the art of creating and distributing viruses, and Spyware, in the hopes of dominating the e-commerce market. When you think of all the people out there scratching and clawing their way around trying to take your money, one would wonder why we all aren't entitled to a little SurferRage. However.. that's not what I want to point out to you.. It's the NETRage that hits the closest to home..

NETRage, what is it?

It's a combination of negative reactions coerced by a flood of raging emotions. When a net user is in an emotional state of denial, or frustration, or rage.. from the mishaps in their life.. which, luckily they aren't in their car where they can literally cause physical harm to you, which is a good thing, but they are in control of their keyboard.. and that send button.. the email of the upset user can't be taken back.. and no matter how sorry that enraged person is when they calm down, the end result is irreconcilable..

When you are rejected from a casting director, or you are ridiculed for a film that took you a year to create putting you heart and soul into.. or perhaps you spent 3 years working on a novel, or a script.. You are at an emotional high, you're pumped to the max when you get to that finish line.. all ready to reap the rewards of your efforts, believing in your project.. your teammates.. yourself.. only to suffer the humiliation of defeat.

Now that's what I'm talking about. What do you do. I can think of a few things. For me snuggling down with an Arnold Movie and smooth chocolate does it. For others they go out and celebrate that one project was finished, and they brainstorm with positive reflection vowing not to repeat any mistakes.. but there are those who turn to the inbox. Ohh can't you foresee the disaster of such a thing. All of the negative emotions flooding all over their keyboard.. defending their project, their team.. and insulting and burning every bridge they have or will ever walk on. Ohhh what a tangled web.. one of which there is no escape.

At the end of the day, it's up to yourself how you handle the rough patches. There are many of us out there who went through or will walk your steps. It's a learning experience, and one the first things you must learn, or trust me you wont' make it.. is proper etiquettes. Rejection is not a stab at you personally. The CD's, producers, publishers, financiers, don't have the time or budget to waste on holding the hands of everyone who walks through their doors. They are on a tight schedule. You are expected to be professional, either you have the walk and look or you don't. They already have the image in their mind.. they are just seeking the physical and personable form to suit it. It's not against you. So take that to heart, and even if you it makes you want to walk away from the business, and you don't at that moment particularly care if you burn the bridge.. do yourself a favor, and take time off to recharge. If you want to write those hurtful emails go ahead.. just make sure you delete them or put them in your drafts folder. Never click send when you're upset. Not even to friends and family. You'd be suffering from a case of NETRage if you did, and we want you to have a happy and good life. So be yourself, and remember to treat everyone the way you want to be treated.
