Choosing the right domain name is one of the most basic things every online marketing beginner should learn. A domain name serves as your business' identification online and will be an important component of your branding and advertising efforts. It will also be a major factor in your search engine optimization efforts. It will determine how well your promotional efforts will work and whether or not prospective customers will find you online. Here is a guide on what to do in choosing the right domain name for your online marketing business:

Finding the right domain name

The first place you should probably look at is your business. Hopefully, you picked a business name that you can use, something that isn't already registered as a domain name. It's best to use a domain name that is directly related to your business or if you already have a brand name, then use that instead. You can, for example, use www.cleanurhouse.com for your housecleaning service or www.organicchips.com for your organic snack products.

However, if your desired domain name is already being used or registered to another company or individual, you might want to go online and search for keywords that are related to your business. If you're offering sports products, for example, you might want to consider domain names including the words 'active', 'games', 'hobby' or you might want to use related names such as 'vigor', 'zest', 'health', 'live', etc. if you'll be selling food products especially formulated for active individuals.

You might also want to use your target market as a basis for choosing the right domain name for your online marketing business. Domain names like 'scrapbookingnewbies.com' or 'homebizformoms.net' are easier to remember.

Make your domain name unique.

This can be quite difficult especially if your industry is a bit saturated. If you're a beginner in a loans-related online marketing business, for example, you'll have some tough competition. Finding a domain name might prove a bit challenging, but not impossible. All you need to have is a little creativity and imagination.

Try to stay away from known companies and brands. A domain name that is somewhat similar to a known domain name, even if it's a different business and offers a different product, can get confusing for your prospective customers. A plural form of a famous domain name, for example, can be troublesome. Imagine if you're selling disco, strobe and blinking lights and using a domain name like 'Flicker.com', which some people might confuse with the more known 'Flickr.com'.

Make your domain name easy to find.

You might want to be unique but when you're an online marketing beginner, you also want to be found easily. This is why much as you would like to stand out, you still have to make sure that prospective customers find you. Choose a domain name that is easy to remember, type and spell. Too complicated and you'll lose your traffic. Too long and you'll frustrate your visitors. Too unfamiliar and it will be easily forgotten.

You might also want to think twice about using restrictions such as hyphens or underscores. Make use of numerals only if it is part of your identity. Symbols and spaces in between characters are not allowed. Domain names are also case insensitive so it doesn’t matter whether you use capital letters or not.

Your domain name should be related to your brand or business.

The key here is to make your domain name recognizable. People who hear or read it should be able to associate it with your company or product. The domain names WebMD.com and CareerBuilder.com, for example, are easily identifiable with their products and services. There's no mistaking what they have to offer. Other domain names, although already famous, had to work on their branding a little bit to get the correct association. Try to use the same principles when you choose your own domain name.

Be careful about copyrights and trademarks.

Choosing the right domain name doesn’t mean infringing on someone else's copyright. Be careful about this, especially if your company or brand name is similar to a known company or brand. Should someone complain, your domain name could get pulled out. If you suspect your chosen domain name could be similar to a known domain or just to make sure you don't make any copyright violations, check out its availability at www.copyright.gov or perform a simple search online.

Which extension to use?

There are plenty of choices for a domain name extension you can use. However, you might want to consider a few things. Many Web users and surfers, believe it or not, automatically believe that a domain name always ends with a .com, even if a host of other extensions are available, such as .net, .org or territory-based extensions. If you use a domain name such as MyProducts, your prospective visitors will automatically think its URL address is www.myproducts.com, even if you registered it as www.myproducts.net.

Choosing the right domain names for your business is an important decision for online marketing beginners. Try to follow the restrictions often imposed for using domain names while making sure you choose a domain name that is as unique as your brand.
