Get to know your clipart
Before the inventions of the more modern graphic designs, pictures and animations, everybody loves using clipart. Why clipart? They can quite convenient up to now. They are already there ready whenever you need them in your prints. All you have to do is click on them and copy paste. Along with this, there are cd-roms offering thousands of clipart to choose from.

Contrast into printing
A printing job's purpose is to communicate a message. Most often than not, the messages are left ignored when it has no impact on people. Knowing the right impact to put into your prints will guarantee your message read and understood. One way to do this is to put some visual impact into your work. This can be a form of powerful words, eye-catching graphic design or a good layout.

Paper talk in printing
A small factor but otherwise needs some consideration in printing is choosing the kind of paper your print job would be printed on. A few designers do not give much thought about this issue. Some may have techniques so that the color in whatever paper printed on would not affect the prints. Some just do not give a damn about it as long as they have done their work.

Digital photos sans digital cameras
As you may already be aware, printing is turning digital. Not to be outdone, photography went digital also. It is easy to understand why. With digital cameras, they become the expert that they want to become in taking photos, with the help of the digital scanning and Photoshop, of course. They can now experiment with their photos, enhancing them; taking off unwanted factors, imperfect details and adding different setting into them.

Why people ignore your postcards?
What is the fastest, simplest and cheapest way to promote your business? Postcards. That is, postcards sent by direct mail. This way, you can send your message to prospective clients for less cost, including the postage fees. You can actually send your postcards repeatedly and still not paying too much for it.

Let your brochures do the work for you
Brochures are not created just to have your company or business displayed. Like other print jobs, they have a deeper intent that is in favor of you. By giving people your brochures; you display what you have to make them want to have them themselves. If they get it, you get yours. That is, in terms of sales and not to mention, money.

Professional but cheap website design
Web design is a very competitive area and there is no longer any reason why people should pay large amounts for website design services. This article describes and explains where to find very very cheap website design services. The first place to try of course is the internet search engines themselves.

As a designer, this article is aimed specifically at other designers who have felt my pain! And if you're just breaking into the industry - understand that no matter what you do, you won't be able to avoid the inevitable "Clients From Hell". Here are a few of my experiences...

"I want this bit to be red and this bit to be green"
No, you don't. That would look stupid. It still amazes me how much non-designers will fight for their opinion, despite it being wrong. While I agree that opinion is of course just that - an opinion - when something is barely legible and looks frankly horrible, that opinion *must* be negated.

"Drop shadows always look good!!1"
If used correctly, and subtley, they can indeed bring an extra dimension to a piece of work. Use and abuse them, and they will bastardize your baby into a mish mash of horrendous, amateuristic rubbish! I think drop shadows perform well when they are small, light and placed only on objects that *should* cast a shadow. Don't go dropping them on every button on your page, and every piece of text that you think needs to stand out.

"3D - it's the future innit!"
No it's the past. Using 3D objects to illustrate elements of a web page has been done to absolute death. Hints at 3D - gradients on buttons for example - is a more modern technique, which you will see on most Web 2.0 websites, but even these are beginning to appear dated.

"Can we make that a different colour?"
This seemingly innocent request is probably one of the most difficult challenges faced by the designer. Changing a colour could very well impact the entire site - meaning you will be trawling through PSD's, exporting new graphics, editing your stylesheets... all for the client to then say they preferred it how it was.

These are just a few issues that web designers must tackle. I find that the best way when starting a project is to steer the client into your direction of thinking, but allow them to have their own opinions also. 99% of the time, you know best, and unless you are controlled by the companies branding policies, you are well within your rights to argue "No, people can't read small grey text on a whitebackground very easily". Unfortunately, the client does have the FINAL SAY, but as a designer you are obliged to point them in the right direction as much as possible.

About the Author

Having years of experience in the design field, I have encountered some truly bizarre characters. Some that insisted drop shadows on every item on the page was a positive, and one that even tried to pay for his website by allowing me and my band to rehearse for free in his function room. Well, I was a kiddo when I started this web design malarky...
