Learn HTML, is it a must do task?
This is a common question among "newbies" on the internet. Usually I hear arguments like: Writing HTML is slow and time consuming, I don't have time to learn HTML, I'm not good at learning computer languages and the list goes on and on. Ok, let's get something straight. The answer to all this arguments and questions is divided on YES and NO.

Avoiding some graphic design mistakes
For your website to work, you do not the best of designers to do it for you. And you do not need the many beautiful and exciting graphic designs that others may be offering. The thing is for you to choose and use graphic designs that will compliment and bring out the best in your design. The most common mistake that people make is that they do not consider the effects that their graphic designs can do.

CSS and the End of Tables
In the bad old days of the web, the only way to create even slightly complex layouts was to use tables. Some sites featured silly numbers of tables, one inside the other, to create relatively simple-looking effects. With CSS, though, tables can finally be replaced. What's So Bad About Tables? If you've ever worked with a site that uses tables, you'll know just how difficult it can be.

Template Design Services: Getting a Customized Web Design
Nowadays, small and growing business owners are opting for a website template instead of using the services of a professional web designer. Using web template design has becoming quite popular in today's context when organizations have realizing the value of web presence for the growth of their business across the globe.

Offshore Outsourcing
Offshore outsourcing opportunity is one of the most advantageous options that globalization and spread of the Internet brought into our lives. Why to pursue your web design project at home if you can have the same quality service delivered to you for a much more reasonable price? The only thing you need is to find the overseas outsourcing company that you may put your trust in.

Designing for Sales
One thing that lots of designers don't seem to understand is that there's a big difference between the kind of design you should use if you're trying to present information (usually with ads), and the kind of design you should use if the aim of your website is to make sales. This distinction causes a lot of confusion, bad design, and, ultimately, lost sales.

Build a Better Business Site
A good web site is one of the most important assets a small business can have, but what exactly makes a business web site "good?" To some extent, the answer depends on what type of industry you are in. But certain elements are common to most business sites, and should be implemented regardless of your type of business.

As a designer, this article is aimed specifically at other designers who have felt my pain! And if you're just breaking into the industry - understand that no matter what you do, you won't be able to avoid the inevitable "Clients From Hell". Here are a few of my experiences...

"I want this bit to be red and this bit to be green"
No, you don't. That would look stupid. It still amazes me how much non-designers will fight for their opinion, despite it being wrong. While I agree that opinion is of course just that - an opinion - when something is barely legible and looks frankly horrible, that opinion *must* be negated.

"Drop shadows always look good!!1"
If used correctly, and subtley, they can indeed bring an extra dimension to a piece of work. Use and abuse them, and they will bastardize your baby into a mish mash of horrendous, amateuristic rubbish! I think drop shadows perform well when they are small, light and placed only on objects that *should* cast a shadow. Don't go dropping them on every button on your page, and every piece of text that you think needs to stand out.

"3D - it's the future innit!"
No it's the past. Using 3D objects to illustrate elements of a web page has been done to absolute death. Hints at 3D - gradients on buttons for example - is a more modern technique, which you will see on most Web 2.0 websites, but even these are beginning to appear dated.

"Can we make that a different colour?"
This seemingly innocent request is probably one of the most difficult challenges faced by the designer. Changing a colour could very well impact the entire site - meaning you will be trawling through PSD's, exporting new graphics, editing your stylesheets... all for the client to then say they preferred it how it was.

These are just a few issues that web designers must tackle. I find that the best way when starting a project is to steer the client into your direction of thinking, but allow them to have their own opinions also. 99% of the time, you know best, and unless you are controlled by the companies branding policies, you are well within your rights to argue "No, people can't read small grey text on a whitebackground very easily". Unfortunately, the client does have the FINAL SAY, but as a designer you are obliged to point them in the right direction as much as possible.

About the Author

Having years of experience in the design field, I have encountered some truly bizarre characters. Some that insisted drop shadows on every item on the page was a positive, and one that even tried to pay for his website by allowing me and my band to rehearse for free in his function room. Well, I was a kiddo when I started this web design malarky...
