Dreamweaver, FrontPage or XSitePro?
FrontPageŽ and DreamWeaverŽ are both great pieces of software but they were NOT designed with Internet Marketers in mind. XSITEPRO was, which is why it has rapidly become the web site development tool of choice for Internet Marketers who are serious about running a profitable online business.

Web Design is The Essence of Your Business
Web Design is Fun. It is undeniably a practice of design, a process by which problems are solved. For the millions of web surfers out there, your web design is their first impression of your business and your credibility. The key issue in web design is how to add value to the user's experience, how to make them feel that they truly got something out of visiting your web site.

How to design new websites 50% faster, and continues to get faster as you do mor...
One of the toughest step of web designing has always been the part where you have to crack your head, thinking of the best concept and presentation for the topic you're doing. If you are a perfectionist by nature, double up that level of difficulty. If situation allows, I wouldn't be surprised if the difficulty level might increase even further, taking into consideration other factors such as client's complex requirements, insufficient supporting materials, lack of time, etc.

Graphic Design
Graphic design basically is visual problem solving using text or graphical elements. Your aim is to create something that is catchy to the eye, and gets the attention of the viewer. But things can't just look great. They have to work as well. Web-based applications have brought graphic designers closer to software development projects than ever before.

The details rule in web design
When it comes to websites, the details matter. Although many site owners believe the important thing is merely to get a website up, that's only a small part of the job. Effective sites take a lot of planning--and a lot of concentration on the details. Of course, there are some site owners who obsess over details that really aren't going to matter to visitors--such as crafting the perfect logo, deciding whether Verdana or Arial is the ideal font face, or deciding whether the background of the left column should be navy or burgundy.

Icons
An icon in Windows is a small picture or object that represents a file, program, web page, or command. Most of the time, the icon picture relates to the function of the item that it represents. Icons are used to represent a concept, function or feature in different ways. Like any graphic representations, icons enhance aesthetics.

Use Free Clip Art On The Internet For Your Basic Design Needs
There are many sites on the internet offering clip art for a price or for free. It is up to you to choose the right clip art for your site. The clip art that is available for free is usually clip art that will be used by many people. So if you use free clip art, there is a high possibility of some other site on the internet using the same clip art on the site.

As a designer, this article is aimed specifically at other designers who have felt my pain! And if you're just breaking into the industry - understand that no matter what you do, you won't be able to avoid the inevitable "Clients From Hell". Here are a few of my experiences...

"I want this bit to be red and this bit to be green"
No, you don't. That would look stupid. It still amazes me how much non-designers will fight for their opinion, despite it being wrong. While I agree that opinion is of course just that - an opinion - when something is barely legible and looks frankly horrible, that opinion *must* be negated.

"Drop shadows always look good!!1"
If used correctly, and subtley, they can indeed bring an extra dimension to a piece of work. Use and abuse them, and they will bastardize your baby into a mish mash of horrendous, amateuristic rubbish! I think drop shadows perform well when they are small, light and placed only on objects that *should* cast a shadow. Don't go dropping them on every button on your page, and every piece of text that you think needs to stand out.

"3D - it's the future innit!"
No it's the past. Using 3D objects to illustrate elements of a web page has been done to absolute death. Hints at 3D - gradients on buttons for example - is a more modern technique, which you will see on most Web 2.0 websites, but even these are beginning to appear dated.

"Can we make that a different colour?"
This seemingly innocent request is probably one of the most difficult challenges faced by the designer. Changing a colour could very well impact the entire site - meaning you will be trawling through PSD's, exporting new graphics, editing your stylesheets... all for the client to then say they preferred it how it was.

These are just a few issues that web designers must tackle. I find that the best way when starting a project is to steer the client into your direction of thinking, but allow them to have their own opinions also. 99% of the time, you know best, and unless you are controlled by the companies branding policies, you are well within your rights to argue "No, people can't read small grey text on a whitebackground very easily". Unfortunately, the client does have the FINAL SAY, but as a designer you are obliged to point them in the right direction as much as possible.

About the Author

Having years of experience in the design field, I have encountered some truly bizarre characters. Some that insisted drop shadows on every item on the page was a positive, and one that even tried to pay for his website by allowing me and my band to rehearse for free in his function room. Well, I was a kiddo when I started this web design malarky...
